Downloading files from LUVLE for batch submission to Turnitin
At Lancaster Uni the LUVLE virtual learning environment is where a lot of assignments are first submitted to the tutor, so this will actually be the start point for a lot of work with Turnitin. Most departments using Turnitin run a dual system, with student scripts handed in on paper, but there is a requirement to hand in on-line too, so that (usually) admin staff can run the work through Turnitin to check each for copying.
To download files for batch checking from a LUVLE module, click on the 'coursework' menu link on the left hand side of the menu1, and this will take you to the coursework area where you will have set up assignments to which the students submit their coursework. How to set up assignments and lots more about how LUVLE submissions work is covered in the LUVLE staff users' guide.
When you click on the 'coursework' link, it'l take you through to a list of assignments. Click on the one containing work that you want to check, and you'll see something like the image below - this is the page with the header and the menus missing.

This is a product in transition, and the tab on the page called "Turnitin Processing" doesn't work at the moment. In order to create a zip file which can be downloaded to your hard drive, and then uploaded to Turnitin for checking you need to click on the "Archive coursework submissions" link as shown. This will take you through to the screen in the following image:

As shown the image, click on the "Create Archive File" button, this will create the zip file, and it will be shown as below:

If you click on the CWZip.zip link shown, it will let you save the zip file to your computer's hard drive. The file will contain all of the files that were attached to all of the coursework documents in the coursework assignment as shown below:

In our example there was only one test student username, but there were two files uploaded by the student, and these are shown above. Normally, an assignment's uploaded files would of course contain many students' work, and they would normally upload one or two files each. In order to tell between the work of all the students, LUVLE prepends the student's username and their library card number2 to the front of the files that they've uploaded. In the example above, the student has a username "berryj", and has a library card number "0000009D2". The student's uploaded files are "ScaryStory1.docx" and "ScaryStory2.docx"
Adding "stragglers'" submissions to existing zip files.
Quite frequently, students are given extensions beyond the cut-off date, and procedures within a department might mean that a zip file is being passed around from lecturer to secretary to be checked for plagiarism for most of the students, and then the stragglers' documents are sent on
afterwards. This can lead to submissions being lost, and so it's probably best to put them all in the same zip file. To do this is easy. The zip file will show up on a Windows machine like the picture on the left. All you have to do, is drag the files to be added onto the zip folder, and it'll add them in. To check, you can open the folder and look inside.

1 If the coursework link is missing on the lefthand menu of the LUVLE module, it will be because coursework submissions are not turned on. They can be turned on by staff in the 'configure site' link. How to do that is covered in the LUVLE Guide for Staff .
2 If anonymised submissions are turned on, only the library card number appears in the coursework and in the zip files. The name is set to the value NULL in the zip files.
