If you would like to use Turnitin, please contact Learning Technology Group at iss-service-desk@lancaster.ac.uk in order to get a Turnitin login so that you can start uploading essays for checking. Turnitin is used in several different ways, and in some you might need other logins - please see below for likely options.
1. Using the University's VLE (aka LUVLE, Domino, Notes) to collect the essays, and then submitting them to the plagiarism detection software.
For the majority of staff, assignment essays will be submitted by the students to Lancaster University's Virtual Learning Environment (LUVLE). When using this route, the course module being taught will have an instance of a virtual learning environment (VLE) set up for it. This VLE has a submissions area to which the students can submit essays online. The lecturer running the course can then download a packaged up file, known as a 'ZIP file' with all the students' submissions within it to their computer's hard drive, then open a session with the Turnitin software, upload the submissions, and let the software flag essays that may require further investigation. This method requires that the lecturer has a VLE set up for their course, and has access to a Turnitin instructor's login.
In order to get a LUVLE virtual learning environment module set up for a course (most courses have one already), contact iss-service-desk@lancaster.ac.uk . You may also wish to request demonstration of how to use LUVLE's submission facility for your student submissions. In order to have access to a Turnitin instructor's login, please contact the Learning Technology Group at iss-service-desk@lancaster.ac.uk
2. Having the students' submissions gathered by email, on disc or using another VLE, and then submitting them to the plagiarism detection software.
Some departments chose to use another VLE (virtual learning environment) to gather their students' work, or they ask for the work to be submitted by e-mail, or (increasingly rarely!) provided on a disc. If these methods are used, the lecturer need only get access to a Turnitin instructor's login. The lecturer would typically then use his/her chosen method of obtaining the submissions, would package them together into a single file called a 'Zip file' using a program on his/her computer, and then upload all the essays at once to the plagiarism software. If you're using this method, you'll need a Turnitin login, plus a login for the VLE that you're using. Learning Technology only look after the main VLE, LUVLE, so you'd have to contact your department about a login for any other one. In order to have access to a Turnitin instructor's login, please contact Learning Technology Group at iss-service-desk@lancaster.ac.uk
3. Student submission.
If you use the student submission method, they can enroll themselves onto your class area, and so you just need a Turnitin login for yourself. In order to have access to a Turnitin instructor's login, please contact Learning Technology Group at iss-service-desk@lancaster.ac.uk
