Welcome to Lancaster, one of the top UK universities for research and teaching. Being fully immersed in a piece of research and taking an active part in your research community is an exciting adventure. There are many opportunities available to you here at Lancaster, seek them out and develop your research skills to the full. The presentations here along with the Research Student webpages and relevant links will help you see that there are a variety of people on campus that you can contact for advice and support, as well as a variety of opportunities and events that you can attend. I wish you good luck in your studies here at Lancaster University!
As a new PhD student you are now part of the thriving Postgraduate community here on campus and a member of the Graduate College (LUGrad). We represent the whole PG community (Masters and PhDs) - those living on campus and off campus, full time students, part-time and distance students to name but a few. We run a variety of events for all Postgraduates (both on campus and off campus events, curry nights) and for PhDs in particular including the annual PGR Conference and the Summer Fair. We also provide facilities such as the computer room, shower room and games room. You can also contact the college officers if you have any issues. The Postgraduate Studies Office deals with a variety of issues regarding your registration as a Postgraduate during your time here at Lancaster University. These include monitoring your progression, keeping records up to date, finance and fees issues, intercalations and extentions. We also are the place to submit your finished theses for PhD examination (viva) and we are able to offer advice and guidance to PhD students throughout their studies. CEEC provides career advice and guidance to all students on campus and that includes PhDs! The help we provide includes resources within CEEC and online, career workshops specifically aimed at PhD students, career events for all students and you are also able to book a review appointment to speak to a Careers Consultant at any time throughout your time here at Lancaster. Look at our website or come and speak to us to find out how we can help you to take the next steps after your PhD.
These slides re-iterate that we have a 24 hour, 7 days a week safety and security network here on campus. We have the Security Team based in the Reception building and during term time, the College Portering system is also available 24 hours 7 days a week. We have a close relationship with the local Police Authority and their Community Support Officers and we are very proud to report low levels of crime on campus.
Information Systems Sevices (ISS)IT Essentials at Lancaster
ISS provides central computing services to the whole of the University and this presentation gives an overview of what you are entitled to with regard to storage capacity on the University network, where to find out information relating to specific IT courses and software and where to direct any queries you might have regarding email, internet access and software site licences. The online Essential Guide contains further details of the services ISS provides across campus.
The Library is your gateway to research journals, research information, maps, books and much more, it is a fantastic resource. Seek out and get to know your Subject Librarian, they can help you maximise your database searches and fully utilise all Library resources - you can even chat with a Librarian online in real time to answer any queries you might have.
