The University supports the monitoring of potential plagiarism through the use of an online tool called Turnitin, which can be found at: http://www.submit.ac.uk
This on-line service is very useful for detecting plagiarism and other problems with essays, such as poor referencing. We've written a guide to help staff use the tool at Lancaster:
There is a section about anti-plagiarism for students on the Effective Learning at Lancaster website, giving advice on the subject of plagiarism, and how to write essays properly. It might be a good idea to make sure that students are aware of this material before setting work, as the University has no systematic mechanism to ensure that students know what an original essay is, and what is expected of them. The formal aspect of this expectation is below:

'Dealing with Plagiarism by Students: Institutional Framework' applies to all coursework submitted by students for examination by the University in all academic programmes.
