Bowland Bar

New Bar and JCR facilities

The refurbishment work on the College bar – The Trough of Bowland – is completed, and now serving food at lunch times. The new-look Trough has greatly improved features: longer bar, more seating, bigger and better toilet facilities (relocated to the former games area). But we still retain the old friendly pub atmosphere that made the Trough so special. There’s wooden flooring, comfortable booths, varied and relaxing seating and, of course, real ale. The University Chancellor, Sir Chris Bonington, has let it be known that he will be available to open the bar formally sometime during Michaelmas Term.

Helping Bowland students into employment

Dear Bowland Senior Member

These are difficult times for young people coming on to the job market, including graduates. Our students work hard to get good degrees and then find themselves in competition with other excellent candidates for a diminishing number of jobs. Senior members in Bowland College have always contributed tremendously to the quality of experience of our students while they are studying. I am now asking if there’s anything we can do to help our students’ employment prospects when they leave. We can’t create jobs but we can do our best to help students in the job hunt. In particular, if we have experience or knowledge of a particular job role, employer, industry or service, we can help individuals seeking jobs in those areas to prepare for the application and selection process. Would you be prepared to act as a resource for Bowland students seeking employment? Would you be willing to pass on your ‘insider’ knowledge and experience to individuals going through the applications process, for example, giving feedback on application letters and CVs, helping to prepare for interviews and selection tests? If you would like to help please contact Pat Brown, Bowland College Administrator, at p.m.brown@lancaster.ac.uk , stating the support you could offer. With this information we can compile a register of potential helpers. Please be assured that this initiative is not a replacement for, or an alternative to, the excellent work done by our CEEC colleagues, who are the professionals in this area. Rather, it is additional informal support from Bowland intended to supplement this central provision.

Thank you for your support.
