College Information
Grizedale College, named after Grizedale Forest in the Lake District, opened in 1975. The name is of Norse origin and means "Valley of the Wild Boar". (Hence our logo). It is at the heart of campus, and close to shops, catering outlets, the Management School and the George Fox Building. However, the college has been completely revamped recently, only reaching completion late in 2009.
We offer some of the most modern accommodation on campus, built to award winning standards. This side of college life is run by Karen Redhead, and she will be deal with any questions you have. For an overview on what is on offer please visit the Accommodation Page.
The college itself has a number of facilities available to make life a little easier and hopefully fun. The residences are built adjacent to our administration block which also contains Grizedale Bar, and Grizedale Social Space. Here you can enjoy a coffee or something stronger with friends, or enjoy a simple meal. Also available here are games such as darts and pool, and WII games.
The admin block also houses a launderette, situated just to the right of the Bar patio, adjacent to Pendle Avenue. There are 5 washers and dryers and is open 24 hours a day. This facility is not run by the college so if you have a problem with a machine please contact the number displayed in the laundrette.
Above the bar/offices is the College Common Room and off campus brew area. The common room, as its name implies, is open to all. There is an open access computer and the whole area is covered by WIFI so you can bring your own laptops etc. The room seats about 30 and is sometimes used by staff for social events. The lockers available for use by students living off campus line the walls of the common room. There is an annual charge of £10.00. All lockers must be emptied before July 31st. Anything left in a locker will be disposed of after that date. For more information about the lockers see Barbara in the College Office.
When the weather turns warm, why not venture outside and have a barbecue, the residences are built around landscaped areas which have barbecue facilities installed, and all conveniently sited just outside the bar. Please make sure you extinguish the barbecue properly before leaving it.
The common room is now home to a piano. This is available for 'respectful' use for those wishing to practise during the first two terms of the year only. In the third term (Summer Term), when exams are in progress, the Common Room will be used for quiet study only. During examination term, the landing by the brew room will act as the off campus area for those wishing to chat quietly rather than study. Please note, that 'Quiet Period' usually starts in the Easter vacation and continues until the end of the final term. Any unnecessary noise during this period carries hefty fines and will be enforced by the Deanery.
