Welfare System
What is it?
A vital welfare and support network at Pendle is the College Advisor system. This provides support for students at college level and help with most of the problems which you might encounter here. Pendle’s Senior Advisor is responsible, with the Assistant Senior Advisor, for the smooth and successful running of Pendle’s Advisor network.
How does it work?
When you arrive in Pendle in Intro Week, you will be allocated a Pendle Advisor. Pendle Advisers are senior members of the college and may be lecturers, researchers, administrators or other members of the University staff. They will be your personal Advisor for the duration of your degree and he or she is committed to helping you make the most of your time at the University. Your Advisor will be available to help you settle into University life and to discuss any problems which may arise; from academic and personal problems to health or financial difficulties, and anything else. You can expect them to take your problems seriously, and to find any further help if necessary.
Is it just for problems?.. (I can sort myself out, thanks!)
The Advisor system is not all about problems it also gives you a good opportunity to meet other College members (senior and junior) and can be a very effective social framework, so be prepared to meet your Advisor in Intro week and join in the introductory social events. If you keep your Advisor informed of your progress, he or she can be a useful ally if you find yourself in any difficulty, be it personal, social or academic. Your Advisor will also be able to provide a reference if you apply for a Master’s degree or a job, if they know you reasonably well.
What if I don’t know who or where my Pendle Advisor is?
You can contact your Pendle Advisor, the Senior Advisor or Assistant Senior Advisor at any time, either directly you will be given contact details – or through the College Office. If you are having difficulties contacting your Advisor, let Jill Harpley know, and she’ll put you in touch. There are also many other services provided for your benefit; your Advisor will tell you about them.

The College Office is situated near to the Porters Lodge (where you collect your parcels and mail). Any Pendle student is more than welcome to drop into the college office at any time between nine and five.
Jill Harpley is the first point of contact for all student queries. She sends regular email updates to all Pendle students, keeping them informed of what’s happening in college and what events are taking place. She liaises with academic departments informing them when students are ill, unable to attend exams or have to be absent from the University during term-time.
Porters
Pendle is lucky to have four great Porters; Sandra, Steve, Maurice and Ian, who play a very important part in the running of the College. You will get to know them very quickly when you are collecting letters and parcels. They are here to ensure that the College operates smoothly and they check areas of the College on weekly basis, so you may see one often on the rounds picking up faults etc. Residents who are disturbed by noisy or disorderly behaviour, where necessary, should complain to the Porter, who is empowered to escort visitors acting in a noisy or disorderly manner from the College and report breaches of College regulations to the Dean. You want the Porters to be your friend!
