During the Lent term, Lancaster University Confucius Institute (LUCI) extended its outreach to local primary and secondary schools, offering enriching sessions known as 'Chinese Day' which revolve around Chinese language and culture.

Between November and March 2024, more than 20 schools in the local community and surrounding region had the opportunity to participate in a Chinese day, with over 50 sessions delivered in total by our brilliant LUCI teachers . The sessions were designed to be engaging and informative, providing students with a glimpse into the diverse facets of Chinese culture.

During the Chinese Day sessions, our LUCI teachers introduced students to Mandarin Chinese greetings, enabling them to interact in basic conversation. Additionally, students delved into the customs and celebrations surrounding Chinese New Year, gaining insights into traditional festivities and practices.

Practical activities were also integrated into the sessions, allowing students to explore Chinese culture hands-on. Craft-making sessions featured the 12 Chinese Zodiac animals, pandas as well as traditional Chinese decorations such as lanterns coupled with blue and white porcelain. Furthermore, students had the opportunity to learn the art of Chinese calligraphy using brushes, ink and rice paper, immersing themselves in the beauty of this ancient writing practice.

The Chinese Day sessions proved to be both educational and enjoyable, providing students with a platform to expand their knowledge and appreciation of China and its language and cultural heritage. By fostering an environment of cultural exchange and learning, LUCI is dedicated to offering local schools Chinese Day sessions as part of our commitment to promoting global understanding in the North West.
