The Lancaster University Confucius Institute is the home to Steve Thomas’ Chongqing Travelogue from 29 January to the 8 March 2024.

This exhibition explores the city through a photographer’s lens, from portraits of daily life to vast cityscapes.

The exhibition is free to attend by all, taking place in the Roundhouse across both floors.

Steve Thomas is a Commercial Manager in the Creative Studio with a lifelong passion for photography and travel. His childhood spent between India and England, and many journeys across China have given him a love for the East. The travelogue is a result of his trip to Chongqing in September 2023 that, while delayed by the pandemic and a typhoon, captures the lively spirit of the city.

As the travelogue shows, photography is a great chance to share global experiences through photography. Follow #chongqingfotos on Instagram and share your own travel images, especially of Chongqing, with Steve! Use the QR codes on display to access the link.

On 19 February, we had the pleasure to welcome the 16th Lancaster Cubs to visit the exhibition.

Steve was there to answer the visitor’s questions about taking photos and talk about his experiences in Chongqing. After looking around the exhibition, the cubs voted for their favourite photo. The winner was the photograph of Mr. Chen, a smiling farmer from a village close to the city.

The visit was also a chance for the cubs to find out more about Chinese culture. They learned some words in Mandarin and made paper lanterns. With this new knowledge, they are ready for the upcoming Lantern Festival.

Thank you to everyone who was a part of this visit.
