We aim to share an understanding of China and Mandarin Chinese to the North West. We offer Mandarin language classes and a variety of cultural classes to students and staff, the local community, local schools and businesses.

Student study trip to China

From 24 March to 2 April, 14 students studying Chinese as part of their degree and 4 learners from the Chinese extra-curricular language classes at Lancaster University participated in the China study trip run by the School of International Education at South China University of Technology and organised by Lancaster University Confucius Institute. 

Chinese Day Sessions Delivered to Local Primary and Secondary Schools

From November 2023 to March 2024, Lancaster University Confucius Institute (LUCI) extended its outreach to local primary and secondary schools, offering enriching sessions known as 'Chinese Days' which revolve around Chinese language and culture.

Successful Chinese Speech Contest Held at Lancaster University

Lancaster University Confucius Institute, in collaboration with the Department of Languages and Cultures, organised a Chinese Speech Contest. The event, held on 13 March, saw enthusiastic participation from contestants who delivered impressive speeches in Mandarin Chinese, fostering friendly exchanges and cultural understanding.

Lancaster University Confucius Institute Academic Seminar | Scandals, Wars and Social Satire: Exploring the Invention of ‘News’ and Negotiations of ‘News Values’ in Late Qing China with Professor Natascha Gentz

On 12 March, Lancaster University Confucius Institute successfully ran an academic seminar titled “Scandals, Wars and Social Satire: The invention of ‘news’ and negotiations of ‘news values’ in Late Qing China” with guest speaker Professor Natascha Gentz, a renowned expert in Chinese Studies from the University of Edinburgh. The seminar attracted nearly 30 faculty members and students from Lancaster University.

Chinese New Year Celebrations Light up Lancaster and Keswick

Lancaster and Keswick were lit up with vibrant colours, captivating performances and cultural festivities as they rang in Chinese New Year with a series of lively events sponsored by Lancaster University Confucius Institute (LUCI).

Chongqing Travelogue Photo Exhibition

The Lancaster University Confucius Institute is the home to Steve Thomas’ Chongqing Travelogue from 29 January to 8 March 2024. This exhibition explores the city through a photographer’s lens, from portraits of daily life to vast cityscapes. The exhibition is free to attend by all, taking place in the Roundhouse across both floors.
