Summary

This programme shares many of its general and subject-specific educational aims with the Lancaster BSc Honours ComputerScience programme. However, this programme embodies a specific pathway through the Computer Science optional courses, coupled with a Multimedia Systems focused final year project. This programme therefore reflects a degree of specialism attained by the student in Multimedia Systems.

This programme is also designed to develop the transferable skills necessary for working within team-based, professional environments. It aims at creating wider career prospects for students by broadening their personal horizons and cultural awareness. The programme is geared to satisfying these objectives in a scheme of study that stresses the development and practical application of knowledge and skills.

This degree is accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). This means that our graduates satisfy the educational requirements for admission to these professional societies and, after a number of years of work experience, are eligible for Chartered Engineer status.

The explicit aims of this programme are to:

-to ensure that students have knowledge of the fundamental principles underpinning the field of Computing;

-to give students a thorough understanding of the nature and special requirements of computer systems supporting multimedia and real-time interactive applications.

-to impart knowledge and experience of the most significant contemporary developments in practice and technology;

-to help students develop the skills they will need in order to respond positively to evolution of their chosen discipline throughout the course of their career;

-to develop those critical, analytical and problem-solving skills needed by a practising Computing professional;

-to develop the range of transferable skills necessary for working within team-based, professional environments;

-as a minimum, to satisfy the requirements for accreditation by the BCS and IET.

Career opportunities

Graduates with a degree in Computer Science have a wide range of career options open to them as employers value the transferable skills Computer Science students gain in logical analysis, communication and project management. Our courses provide opportunities for you to develop your skills in group working, presentation and project management which will prove to be assets in almost all careers. In addition to the normal paths for graduate employment our degrees provide you with a set of technical skills that open up new and exciting possibilities. As the number and diversity of computers increases so does the range of jobs open to Computer Scientists.

A degree in Computer Science provides a set of skills that can help you set up your own company, and a number of former students have done this with considerable success. This entrepreneurial approach is well catered for with the facilities available in InfoLab21 which also provides employment opportunities through its Graduate Academy.

Many Lancaster graduates also choose to carry out further study in Computer Science. Our international research profile means that we have a thriving graduate programme and a number of our own graduates choose to stay with us for the Masters or PhD programmes with many places on these programmes funded from research and teaching grants. Upon graduating these students find jobs at the cutting edge of Computer Science - often in advanced research and development labs or academia.

Financial Support

UK students applying for this degree scheme and who put Lancaster University down as their firm choice will automatically be considered for £1000 p.a. Academic Scholarships. No separate application is necessary. Depending on household income, students may also receive a Bursary of up to £1000 p.a.
