A
t the time of the Dissoluation, Furness Abbey was the second wealthiest monastic Cistercian site in England
after Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire. Although not as well known as some other monastic ruins in the
north, Furness Abbey has continued to attract large
numbers of visitors, including artists, writers, scholars and photograhpers,
particularly after the opening of the Furness Railway in the mid-nineteenth century.
The ruins of the Abbey are now a recognised part of the tourist circuit in northern England.
This beautifully illustrated book demonstrates the impact which the site has had on a variety of
visitors through the years
