A History of Linen in the North West

T he growing of flax and its conversion into linen thread and linen cloth had a long history in the North West of England. This books brings together five essays on various aspects of the industry from medieval times to the twentieth century from domestic to factory industry, from local to international trade, from rise and expansion to decline and fall .

The five contributors, Mary Higham, Diana Winterbotham, Margaret Robinson, Joan Wilkinson and Jennie Brunton share with the reader the fruits of their own considerable research into some of the many and varied aspects of the story of linen .
