Service of Thanksgiving for the Life of Mrs Amelia Caldwell, 1921 - 2009,
The University invites you to attend a Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Mrs Amelia Caldwell, who died on 29th January 2009, aged 87. The service will take place in the Anglican Chapel in the Chaplaincy Centre at Lancaster University. Refreshments will be served in the Chaplaincy Centre Lounge after the service.
Amelia was a devoted supporter of the University, serving on the University Council, where she was instrumental in the founding of the Graduate College, and as an assiduous member of the University Court for many years.
It is hoped that as many as possible of her friends and former colleagues from the region and the University will be able to join in marking Amelia's passing and celebrating her life.

NEWSFundingThe announcement of the funding allocated to universities was made this week, partly based on criteria linked to the performance in the Research Assessment Exercise. Generally, Lancaster has maintained its funding, emerging about 3% up. In three areas, LICA (Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts, LEC (The Lancaster Environment Centre) and Biomedicine, have received significantly increased funding. Lancaster is ranked joint 15th out of 147 UK institutions for the amount of research judged to be of world leading importance. › To view the full story LICA buildingAn environmentally friendly timber structure for the new LICA building has been given the go ahead. Timber frames use wood from sustainably managed forests, which significantly reduces the CO2 emissions of the project. The CO2 emissions resulting from the construction of a timber frame are just 1.4kg per square metre building areas as opposed to 19.3kg for steel (ore-based) frames (72.5% difference). The winners will receive cash prizes. The results will be announced by guest speaker Donnachadh McCarthy, eco-auditor and author, who will also speak about living a low carbon lifestyle. Everyone is welcome to attend the ceremony on Thursday 12th March in the Elizabeth Livingston Lecture Theatre, Bowland North at 2pm. Cassandra Farrin was awarded a £20,000 Fulbright Scholarship to study for a one year Masters degree in Religious Studies. She is one of only 13 US citizens out of several hundreds who were accepted for postgraduate scholarships to study in the UK after a rigorous application process through the US-UK Fulbright Commission, founded by Senator J William Fulbright in 1948. › To view the full story Postgraduate finalist in arts contestA Lancaster University student is a finalist in a national arts competition. Colette Lawlor, who is studying for an MA in Creative Writing, is a finalist in the Poetry category of a competition organised by the arts magazine Aesthetica. The competition is open to entries of fiction, poetry and artwork and the winner of each category will be awarded a prize of £500. Winners and runners up will be published in the 2010 Aesthetica Annual. › To view the full story First webcast of a contemporary operaLancaster International Concert Series’ forthcoming event The Lighthouse will be discussed on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune programme tonight, Friday 6 March, at approximately 6.15pm. The performance at the Great Hall on Thursday March 12th is the world premiere of a major new production by one of the UK’s leading contemporary music ensembles Psappha. It will also be the first webcast broadcast of a contemporary opera from Monday 30th March at http://www.lancasterconcerts.co.uk, http://www.psappha.com. Psappha’s Elaine Tyler Hall, James Oxley, Damian Thantry, Jonathan Best and Nicholas Kok will take part in a live interview with BBC presenter Sean Rafferty and also perform live in the studio. The programme will also be streamed live on the BBC Radio 3 website and will be available to listen again for seven days after the broadcast. Degree ceremoniesCongregations for the conferment of Bachelor and Honorary Degrees will take place from 13th – 17th July 2009. DCE supporting young parentsA young parents group from Accrington and Rossendale College and their children visited Lancaster University last week for an event organised by the Department of Continuing Education (DCE) as part of the Access Lancaster Masterclasses project. The students were aged between 17 and 24 years and their children’s ages ranged from 8 months to 8 years. They visited the Pre-School Centre, toured campus and attended a workshop on student finance. The group aims to support young parents who wish to continue with their education but face the difficult challenge of juggling this with their parental responsibilities. The majority of the students on this visit have applied to go to University or intend to do so, and the event provided useful information and encouragement. In the academic year 2007-08 DCE provided learning opportunities for over 1,000 students from local and regional schools and colleges as part of the Access Lancaster Masterclasses project. Students to perform at the Dukes Theatre in LancasterLancaster University Theatre Group is to perform Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing on March 6/7 at 7.30pm at the Dukes Youth Theatre. There are also plans to take the play to the Edinburgh Fringe this summer. Set in the idyllic region of Messina, the play concerns the ‘merry war’ of Beatrice and Benedick as a wedding takes place. Meanwhile, the deceitful Prince John seeks to disrupt the festivities, with the intrepid constable Dogberry hot on his heels. LUTG produces 9 high quality professional shows in a variety of venues every year to an annual audience of around 10,000 people. PeopleProfessor Charles Alderson (Linguistics) was interviewed on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme, 4 March, about his research into inadequate English language tests for pilots and air traffic controllers which are putting lives at risk. The Today programme is Radio 4's most popular programme and reaches an average of just over six million listeners every week. Emma previously worked for the Estate Management cleaning services at the University for 18 months before taking up her new position. NoticesScience Park Lancaster City have posted a display in the University Library that shows the outline development of the Science Park. This is part of the City’s outline planning application process and similar displays have gone up in Galgate and in Lancaster. Invitation to apply for grants of up to £3,000 The Joy Welch Educational Charitable Trust has invited Lancaster to submit one-page applications for grants. These should be for science-based projects which show the potential benefits for the UK economy in the fields of medicine, agriculture, engineering or environmental issues.
