Rick Deckard is a retired Blade Runner, that is, a cop that tracks down and kills replicants (robots that are almost identical to humans with a four year lifespan). It's not completely obvious why he quit but it may have been because he was uncomfortable with killing these things that are pretty much indistinguishable from people. Near the beginning of the movie Deckard is coerced by his former boss into tracking down and killing four replicants (Roy, Leon, Pris, and Zhora) for a considerably sum of money.

Deckard visits the HQ of the Tyrell Corporation, the company responsible for designing and building the replicants. Here he gives Rachael the empathy test, and discovers that she is a replicant, but that she doens't know it. She has a programmed memory, and even photos of her past. Later on Rachael visit Deckard's apartment, visibly upset at the possibility that she is not human, and that her past is not real. Deckard realises that he has feelings for Rachael.

Meanwhile, the replicants are trying to find out how they can extend their lives. Roy and Leon discover that a man named Sebastian may be able to help them, so Pris finds Sebastian and talks her way into his apartment.

Deckard tracks down Zhora and kills her, after which he is ordered by his boss to kill Rachael. He is then attacked by Leon, but Rachael kills Leon, saving Deckard's life and they return to his apartment, they kiss, and Deckard allows her to hide out.

Roy joins Pris at Sebastian's apartment and convinces Sebastian to get him in to see Tyrell, his creator. Tyrell tells Roy that he cannot extend his lifespan, and Roy kills both Tyrell and Sebastian in anger.

Meanwhile Deckard tracks down Pris at Sebastian's apartment and kills her. Roy returns, fins Pris dead, and then he and Deckard fight. Eventually Deckard finds himself dangling of the edge of a tall building, and Roy, clearly the stronger, reaches down and drags Deckard to safety. After delivering a frankly beautiful death soliloquy, Roy dies, his four year lifespan having come to an end.

Deckard returns home to find Rachael safe and well, despite her having been discovered by his partner. They drive off into the sunset and presumably live happily ever after...
