The Portraits of John Ruskin

9 September - 29 October 2000

Nearly one hundred likenesses of Ruskin... portraits, medallions, cameos, caricatures, busts and photographs, obscure and famous are gathered together to show the great man through his life, from cradle to grave.

Many images from private collections, rarely seen by the public, from the National Gallery, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, Tate Galley, as well as our own pictures will be on display.

This exhibition is an exciting chance to see together in one place most of the well known and little known images of John Ruskin.

On display are portraits by John Everett Millais (the famous Glenfinlas portrait (above), and many sketches) George Richmond, Arthur Severn (right), W.G. Collingwood, Hubert von Herkomer, Isabella Jay and others. Photographs by John McClelland, Frederick Hollyer and Lewis Carroll can be seen side by side with painted images and characitures by Max Beerbohm, and Adriano Cecioni.

The exhibition has been on display in the Ruskin Gallery, Sheffield. When it has completed it's stay here it moves to the Ashmolean Museum , Oxford 21 November - 24 January 2001.
