Asbestos
Asbestos was used extensively in the UK in building construction before 2000. Its usage began to decline in the 1970s and its use in new construction was prohibited by 2000. The University recognises that given the range of ages of its premises, there are locations where there are asbestos containing materials, and that these locations must be managed to ensure any asbestos materials remain safe or are removed.
Legal Duty
The Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations places legal duties on the University to 'manage' asbestos on its premises.
Policy
- To prevent so far as is reasonably practicable, any exposure to asbestos
- To provide and maintain an asbestos register for all buildings
- To implement an effective asbestos management strategy, based on risk assessment, to ensure that all asbestos-containing materials will be maintained, sealed and labelled or isolated, or removed safely.
- To apply resources affectively in a planned and strategic manner
- To re-inspect the estate and update the regioster and to ensure the safe condition of asbestos
- To carry out careful checks before any work which may disturb asbestos may commence
- To provide information and guidance on asbestos
- To promote awareness of asbestos and asbestos precautions
Minor Remedial Work in your Department
If you are considering remedial or repair works to the fabric of the building in your department you MUST contact Facilities for advice before you agree to appoint any contractor.
Asbestos Containing Material or Equipment
If you have any concerns about materials or equipment that you have discovered in your department which you think may contain asbestos contact Jimmy Halton in Facilities ext. 92414
Exposure
