Guidance for Departments Employing Children and Young Persons on Work Experience Placements
The aim of this guidance is to ensure that children and young persons on work experience placements at the University are afforded an equivalent standard of health, safety and welfare as is afforded to University employees generally.The guidance is provided to enable departments to comply with the provisions of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, particularly the requirement to conduct an assessment of the risks affecting the child or young person.
An example of a form which may be used for the assessment isgiven, together with a summary of work activities in which those persons must not be employed on work experience unless the significant risks identified can be avoided.
Duties and Responsibilities
Head of Department
- to make suitable arrangements to assess the risks to children and young persons before they start work
- ensure that those persons are given appropriate information to allow them to work safely
- to provide appropriate health and safety information to parents
- to inform University Procurement for the purposes of employer's liability insurance
