Lone Working
This guidance addresses the health and safety requirements where persons work alone, on identification of hazards, assessment of any significant risks arising from those hazards, and implementation of safe working arrangements.
This guidance does not apply to fieldwork which is addressed separately.
Persons are considered to be working alone if they have neither visual or audible communication with someone who can summon assistance in the event of an accident or illness.
Lone working must not be undertaken where there is a reasonably foreseeable risk that the work might result in an accident which would be sufficiently serious to require a second person to be available to summon help.
Duties and Responsibilities
Head of Department
- to ensure that a risk assessment is carried out and, if appropriate, clear written arrangements drawn up and put into place to ensure that lone working can be carried out safely.
