Manual Handling
The University is required to comply with the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 which aim to reduce the incidence of injuries caused by the manual handling of loads at work.

Risk Assessment
The risk of injury involved in manual handling operations must be assessed.Any operations involving a significant risk of injury should be avoided or the risk reduced so far as is reasonably practicable.
Risk reduction should take into account the nature of the task, the load, the working environment and individual capability.
Duties and Responsibilities
Head of Department
- to arrange for a risk assessment of all departmental manual handling operations
- to nominate one or more members of department to act as assessors of departmental manual handling operations and notify the Safety Office of the appointment
- to ensure that the prescribed hierarchy of measures is considered for addressing any manual handling operation assessed as presenting a risk of injury to employees.
Departmental Manual Handling Assessors
- to identify all departmental manual handling operations and assess them according to the University policy requirements
- to keep a record of all assessments and document any control measures for action by the Head of Department
- to provide training in manual handling to employees
The Safety Office
- to provide manual handling training for Departmental Assessors
- to provide general training and specialist training for specific categories of employees in manual handling.
