Computer Workstation Assessment (Display Screen Equipment Assessment)
Duration: 3 hours
Is this course for me?
This course is for anyone appointed by the Head of Department to assess computer workstations in accordance with University Guidance on the Implementation of the Display Screen Equipment Regulations 1992.
Content:
- The University procedure for assessing workstations in accordance with legal requirements
- Recognition and avoidance of health issues arising from computer use
- Principles of good posture and physical exercises you can do in the office to relieve strain.
- Work and office environment planning
- Practical solutions to common problems
Learning Outcomes
delegates will be able to:- Assess workstations and make recommendations for improvements where needed
- Understand the minimum standards contained in the regulations
- Provide advice to users
- Understand the procedures for arranging eye tests
- Understand their limits of competence and what support is available from the occupational health service
Risk Assessment Principles and Practice - How to Manage Health and Safety Issues
Duration: 5 hours
Is this course for me?
This course is for managers, area safety officers, supervisors and anyone who needs to take a lead on or overview risk assessments.
Risk assessment is fundamental to the management of health and safety and underpins the regulatory approach within both the UK and Europe.
This course will provide all the fundamentals needed to understand risk assessment as well as presenting an overview of health and safety law as it affects the University.

Manual Handling Risk Assessment for Managers and Supervisors
Duration: 3 hours
Is this course for me?
This course is for:
- Supervisors of manual staff, area safety officers, laboratory technicians, grounds staff, security and porters who supervise or plan the work of people who regular lift and carrying materials and equipment.
- Anyone appointed to the role of manual handling assessor by a Head of Department in accordance with section 16 of the manual of safety.
Content:
- The risk assessment of manual handling activities in different situations
- Practical alternatives to manual handling
- Work planning and communication
- Mechanical aids to assist in manual handling
- Principles of good lifting and manual handling technique
- The regulations governing manual handling activity

Manual Handling Technique
Duration: 1 - 2 hours dependant on delegate needs
Is this course for me?
This course is for anyone who is required to use bodily force to move loads on a frequent basis.
The course can be tailored directly to particular manual handling needs. For example previous sessions have been run for security and porters giving general technique training and to Pre School Centre staff focussing on the safe handling of babies and toddlers.

Fieldwork - Health and Safety Guidance for Planners and Supervisors
Is this course for me?
This course is aimed at Heads of Departments and Schools, fieldwork leaders, Principal Investigators, academic supervisors, post graduate students and any members of staff involved in the planning and management of fieldwork.

- University policy for demonstrating good practice in managing fieldwork, including off site visits and travel
- Facilitating fieldwork in even the most remote and challenging environments and circumstances

- An overview of the guidance produced jointly by the Royal Geographical Society and the Universities Safety and Health Association

Chemical Safety in Laboratories - Assessing the Risks and Controlling the Hazards
Duration: 3.5 hours
Is this course for me?
The course is suitable for any post graduate student of member of staff who works with or supervises work with laboratory or proprietary chemicals.
It is specifically intended for individuals who prepare or authorise 'COSHH' assessments.
Course Details
The course will cover the risk assessment process with specific reference to chemical hazards commonly found in the laboratory environment.
Assessment of risks arising from use of proprietary chemicals will also be covered.
Learning Outcomes
Delegates will be:- familiar with the risk assessment process
- Know how to obtain an understanding of the hazards associated with a specific chemical or chemicals
- familiar with and be able to use the 'hierarchy of control'
- able to carry out a COSHH assessment and produce a Safe System of Work
Radiation Protection - General Principles
Is this course for me?
The course is suitable for any student or member of staff who works with ionising radiation.
Course details
The course covers:- the biological effects of exposure to ionising radiation
- the 'internal' and 'external' exposure pathways
- it introduces the concept of 'dose' and its relationship to risk
- describes the basic principles of radiation protection
- the key legal requirements that must be met when undertaking work with ionising radiation
- describes the radiological risk assessment process and the development of a safe system of work.

Delegates will be able to:- define 'ionising radiation'
- Understand the level of risk associated with exposure to ionising radiation
- Identify the nature of the radiological hazards you encounter in your work
- Understand the key ways in which you can minimise your exposure
