PhD RESEARCH IN THE HE-4 GROUP

We have exciting PhD projects available for research on quantum turbulence (QT), on wave turbulence (WT), and on neutron scattering from the liquid surfaces of both He-3 and He-4 isotopes at ISIS. The neutron scattering research includes studies of surface WT but goes far beyond this to encompass studies of how neutrons interact with surface excitations.

PhD students have opportunities for overseas travel to visit our collaborators in Florida and Chernogolovka (near Moscow) and for participation in international conferences.

We can usually offer fully-funded EPSRC PhD studentships to UK applicants; overseas applicants are warmly welcomed too, but a different funding source is normally required.

ACADEMIC VISITORS

We warmly welcome visitors who share our research interests, for either shorter or longer periods.
Funding can often be obtained from the visitor's home country, but there are also some potential UK and European funders. Agencies that have supported our earlier visitors include:

* The Royal Society of London has a wide variety of schemes, applicable to most countries (but currently not to visitors from the USA). As described on their web site, there are schemes for Visiting Fellowships, NATO Postdoctoral Fellowships, and Joint Projects between institutions.
* The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) offers personal fellowships of various kinds. This are highly competitive schemes for young scientists wishing to undertake independent research. EPSRC also fund Visiting Research Fellowships for staff with permanent positions.
* The Leverhulme Trust provides Visiting Fellowships in a variety of schemes that change in detail from year to year.

Applications under all of these schemes are in open competition, mostly requiring a joint proposal between the visitor and the Lancaster group. We will be pleased to assist. Features key to a successful application are usually the academic record of the visitor and a clear demonstration of mutual scientific interest.

Applicants to funding bodies in their home country will find it useful to stress the outstandingly high quality of the Lancaster department. It was one of only four UK physics departments to gain the top grade (5*A) in the 2001 national Research Assessment Exercise (the others being Imperial College London, Cambridge, and Oxford).

To explore the possibility of visiting Lancaster, please contact Peter McClintock with an outline CV and an indication of research interests.
