Environmental Management Systems are designed to set out a standard framework for managing environmental issues in a logical and co-ordinated manner. The purpose of it is to enable an organisation to identify and prioritise environmental issues. Lancaster University has an Environmental Management System which is currently being reviewed and updated.
Environmental Management System Structure
The Environmental Management System comprises a number of documents including: the environmental policy, assessment of environmental impacts, objectives and targets, procedures, internal audits and records. The documents are held in an 'Environmental Management Manual' and are maintained by the Environment and Sustainability Manager. The general structure of it is shown below.
Lancaster University has a comprehensive Environmental Policy, for more details click here.
Assessment of Environmental Impacts
The Environmental Management System is designed to address Lancaster University's environmental impacts. The assessment of environmental impacts is a prioritisation exercise which identifies the most significant impacts, so these can addressed at an early stage. Lancaster University's environmental impacts were initially assessed in 2006 and the assessment procedure can be viewed here. It identified the following issues as the most significant:
- Student Residences
- Construction: Refurbishment
- Construction: New Build
- Travel: Staff Commuting
- Travel: Student Commuting
- Travel: Academic and Business
The assessment will be being reviewed and updated during 2009 in the context of Lancaster University's Carbon Footprint Report.
Objectives, Targets and Management Programme
Lancaster University's Environmental Objectives are derived from the Environmental Policy principles and comprise more specific overall environmental goals. Environmental Targets comprise quantified and detailed performance requirements. The Management Programme sets the Objectives and Targets within a timeframe and allocates resources.
Lancaster University's Environmental Objectives and Targets are under development and are being reviewed in the context of Lancaster University's Carbon Footprint Report. You can download a PDF document of the Envrinmental Objective byclicking here.
Implementation and Operation
The management system is implemented through a range of systems and procedures, links to which will be available from here soon.
Checking and Corrective Action
The management system and aspects of its operation are being audited and reviewed on a regular basis to ensure that procedures are being followed correctly and the system is operating as planned.
A management review of the system will take place on an annual basis in order to determine if significant changes to the system are necessary.
The purpose of the Environmental Managament System is to drive continual improvement in Environmental Performance. Environmental Performance is assessed by reviewing progress against environmental targets and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
