Paper
Office grade paper can be recycled in 'Eurobin' containers labelled 'Paper' in the majority of campus external bin stores. Recycling bins for office paper are also being introduced internally within teaching and administration areas of the University. Please do not:
- Contaminate office paper with other recyclates
- Contaminate office paper bins with general or food waste
- Dispose of barbeques in office paper bins
- Put office paper in the bin in a plastic bag
Newspapers and Magazines
Newspapers and magazines can be deposited in Eurobin containers in the majority of campus external bin stores. Recycling bins for newspaper and magazines are also being introduced within teaching and administration areas of the University.

Card
Card or cardboard can be recycled in Eurobin containers in virtually all campus external bin stores. In addition card can also be deposited in larger capacity FEL skips in ten bin stores. Click here to see which external bin stores you can recycle card at.
When disposing of card please do not:
- Contaminate card with other recyclates
- Contaminate card with general or food waste
- Dispose of barbeques in card bins
- Dump card on bin store floors
Plastic Bottles and Metal Cans
Plastic bottles and metal cans can be deposited in Eurobin containers in virtually all campus external bin stores. Look for the bins with the red lids! Plastic bottle and metal can recycling bins are also being introduced within teaching and administration areas of the University.
When disposing of bottles and cans please can you:
- Wash out the plastic bottles and metals cans before disposal
- Avoid contamination with general waste or other recyclates
- Only dispose of plastic bottles not other plastic items
- Empty bags of bottles and cans into bins
- Not dispose of barbeques in the plastic bottle/metal can bins
Mixed Glass
Mixed Glass (brown, clear or green) can be deposited in Eurobin containers present in virtually all campus external bin stores. The glass bins will all have green lids by next summer. Click here to see which bin stores have mixed glass bins.
When recycling glass please can you:
- Wash out all glass containers before disposal
- Avoid contaminating the glass with general waste or other recyclates
- Not dispose of glass in plastic bags
- Not dispose of barbeques in the mixed glass bins
Confidential Waste
Smaller quantities of confidential waste should be shredded and disposed of in the same way as office paper.
Larger quantities of confidential waste can be disposed of through using the Estates confidential waste disposal contractor service. Contact the Environment Manager Jonathan Mills or Operations Managers Alan Proctor to request confidential waste bags. The confidential waste should be placed in these bags and cleaning staff will transfer the waste to collection locations. The waste is collected by contractors for shredding and disposal approximately every two months. This service is currently free.
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)
If you wish to dispose of any general Waste Electrical or Electronic Equipment on campus please contact Jonathan Mills to arrange for collection. All electrical equipment has to be segregated from general waste and disposed of separately.
Computers
Computers are classified as waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and need to be disposed of through specialist contractors. If your computer is serviced by ISS, they will remove your old computer and any peripherals and deal with disposal.
If your computer or computer peripheral is not serviced by ISS, but you wish to dispose of it, please contact Jonathan Mills to arrange collection and appropriate disposal.
Computers and computer peripherals are classified as WEEE and should not be disposed of with general waste.
Fridges and Freezers
Refrigerators and freezers are classified as WEEE waste, but also require specialist handling, storage and disposal to ensure that the refridgerant gases they contain are removed safely. If you wish to dispose of a fridge, freezer or chiller cabinet please contact Jonathan Mills to arrange collection.
Fridges and freezers are classified as WEEE and should not be disposed of with general waste or dumped in bin stores.
Mobile Phones
Unwanted mobile phones can be dismantled for reuse and recycling. To dispose of an old mobile phone, please pick up a prepaid envelope from any of the College offices and simply post it off.
Batteries
Six new distinctive green battery bins have been fitted at bin stores across campus. The bins can be used to dispose of small dry cell batteries. The new battery bins are located at the following bin stores:
- Conference Centre
- John Creed/County South
- Furness Colton
- Pendle Avenue
- Library Avenue
- Haverthwaite (South West Campus)
To dispose of wet cell batteries (such as lead acid batteries) please contact the Safety Office.
Printer and Toner Cartridges
Collection boxes for printer and toner cartridges are provided in the following locations. The cartridges are dismantled and refurbished for reuse and sale.

Furniture
Estates organise a regular furniture collection service towards the end of each term and in the summer holidays. The furniture is collected by Furniture Matters who refurbish the furniture for reuse or break it down for recycling. If you have University furniture that you would like removing as part of this service, please email Jonathan Mills who will advise of the next collection date and details. This collection is a free service.
Collections of furniture can be arranged at other times, although there is a charge for this service.
Anything you can't take with you at the end of the Summer term!
Lancaster University have teamed up with the St Vincent De-Paul Society to enable the collection of items that are unwanted by students at the end of the summer term. The unwanted items are distributed to charities such as Lancaster Homeless Action and Lancaster Women's Refuge. A very wide range of items can be accepted including any of the following:
- Food: Unopened non perishable food such as cans and packets
- Clothes: Any clothes or shoes in reasonable condition, just please ensure they are clean
- Kitchen Equipment: Any crockery, cutlery, pans, utensils, (but no glass please)
- Childrens Equipment: Any toys, clothes or baby and children equipment. Please ensure this anything given is clean
- Furniture: Small items of furniture such as bedside tables or small shelves would be gratefully accepted
- Electrical goods: Any working electrical items such as kettles, hairdryers, toasters or bedside lights. No TVs or computers please
- Ornamental objects: Pictures, ornaments or other similar objects would be gratefully received
Collection trays will be put into porter's lodges for weeks 9 and 10 of the summer term. The trays will be emptied as they fill up. Further details will be provided nearer the date.
