Demolition of the old Centre for Sport and Recreation

At the beginning of March 2012 work will start on the demolition of the old Centre for Sport and Recreation. The demolition programme of work will take 16 weeks to complete.

Plans are currently being developed for a new building for the Department of Engineering to be erected on this site. Designs and further information will be available soon with a planned start onsite date of summer 2013, completing late 2014.

A number of changes to car parking will be made to allow for the contractor’s site to be set up in preparation for the demolition of the old Centre for Sport and Recreation.

We apologise for any inconvenience this causes you while we work to improve the area. Regular updates will be communicated to users of the areas affected to mitigate any disruption during the demolition work. If you would like to be added to this communication list please send your contact details to Louisa Duff, Facilities Marketing and Communications Manager.

Access Ramp Closure

From Monday 4th March, there will be a change to the principal access route through campus. This will allow for the safe demolition and future development of the old Centre for Sport and Recreation site.

The ramp between Fylde College and the Management School on the south spine will be closed. Pedestrian access will remain open as usual but will be slightly restricted due to the fencing around the old Centre for Sport.

The most direct, alternative access route to avoid the steps will be:

North bound – towards Alexandra Square

Turn right into the Engineering building just before the steps next to the old sports centre.

There are 2 entrances to the foyer of the Engineering building, one of which is power assisted. Go through the power assisted doors, and cross the foyer. Go through power assisted exit doors and leave the Engineering building. Follow the perimeter of the building to the left and go back onto the spine. Continue northwards on the spine.

The doors to the Engineering building are secure doors and out of hours (between 6pm – 8am see info below) they require fob access. To do this you can use your library card.

South bound – towards the Management School and George Fox building

Go down the ramp which takes you past Fylde College and leads towards the Management School.

Stay on the spine towards the Management School, and follow the passage on the first left. Follow the passage to the right around the perimeter of the building. Enter the foyer of the Engineering building through the power assisted double doors.

There are 2 sets of power assisted double doors which allow entry and exit to the Engineering building foyer. These are secure doors and out of office hours they require fob access. To do this you can use your library card.

Cross the foyer, and go through the second set of power assisted doors to the left of the foyer which will take you back onto the Spine. Continue southwards on the spine.

Out of hours fob access

The Engineering building will be locked from 6pm to 8am Monday to Friday, all day Saturday and Sunday and during University closures i.e. Easter. Fob access operates during these times, to do this you can use your library card.

Easter closing dates: 6pm, 27th March – 8am, 4th April
Other closure dates: 6th May Bank holiday, 27th May Bank holiday and 26th August

If you require access out of hours, and have not got your library card there are a number of options. Contact and ask for assistance:

Fylde porters on: 5-93401
Furness porters on: 5-93714
Security on: 5-94541

There will be maps on the signage around the site which will show the new route and directional signage marking the route. This map can also be viewed here.

If you, someone you know, or a guest or visitor do not have a library card and need access to this route out of hours please contact Facilities.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused while we work to improve the area. If you have any queries please contact the Facilities Helpdesk on 01524 593333 or facilities.helpdesk@lancaster.ac.uk

Changes to Visitor and Car Share permit parking

Part of the car park on Farrer Avenue is closed for the duration of the demolition work. Additional Visitor and Car Share parking is being provided on the perimeter road between the Medical Centre and the Management School during this work. Alternatively Visitor and Car Share parking is available in the car park on Grizedale Avenue or Library Avenue. Campus signage provides further information on Visitor parking and Car share permit locations.

Cycle store facilities

Access for cyclists to the Management School cycle racks has changed. The facilities will remain open throughout the demolition work, but they will be accessed by the front of the Management School building along the paved pedestrian path from the perimeter road which leads to the loading bay.
