Travel at Lancaster University

The impact of travel to and from the campus is a key environmental issue facing all of us. We will need your help and support in tackling this.

Lancaster University's Travel Plan 2010-2015 is a major, new initiative, which aims to do just that. It will increase the travel choice of students, staff and visitors while significantly reducing our carbon footprint. The Travel Plan is available here. A key part of the Travel Plan is the car parking policy that supports it.

Changes to Parking Enforcement from 15th October 2012

Why the change?

The Protection of Freedoms Bill becomes law in October 2012. Parking enforcement on campus was previously carried out by the use of vehicle immobilisation (wheel clamping). This new legislation prohibits the practice of wheel-clamping on private land in England and Wales as a legitimate form of parking enforcement.

What is changing?

The University will now implement alternative parking enforcement by issuing parking tickets, Civil Parking Notices (CPNs).

How does this affect me?

From the 15th October 2012 the new ticketing system will be introduced across campus and at Chancellor’s Wharf. Any vehicle found not displaying a valid permit/scratch card or pay and display ticket will be liable to be issued with a CPN.

Penalty fee: A maximum fee of £75 will be charged which can be reduced to £45 if payment is received within 14 days.

Who will issue the tickets?

Parking tickets will be issued by Lancaster University Security. Photographic evidence will be taken and recorded using a hand held device. Details will be downloaded directly to our service partners, Liberty Services, for processing. The University Security department will not be involved in the administration process or take CPN payments.

Who are Liberty Services?

Liberty Services operate as a Car Parking Partnership (CPP) and have been appointed as the approved service partner to work with the University. They currently successfully manage car parking arrangements in partnership with over 26 other universities.

Lancaster University wins sustainable travel award

Lancaster University has been awarded the title of Commuter Friendly Workplace of the Year in the ACT TravelWise awards for sustainable travel. The award is for the organisation that can demonstrate having made the biggest strides towards making their offices more accessible to commuters without single occupancy car use. The proportion of staff travelling to work by bus has doubled since 2004 while the proportion travelling alone by car is down by 17% and the proportion of staff car sharing is up by 17% over the same period from 2007 to 2011.
