The Postgraduate Statistics Centre at Lancaster University offers a programme of continuing professional development courses aimed at scientists, social scientists, health researchers, teachers and professional medical statisticians. Our courses cover a wide variety of topics including Using R Software, Structural Equation Modelling and Longitudinal Data Analysis, as well as Clinical Trials methodology.

Courses for Scientists, Social Scientists, Health Researchers and Teachers

These applied statistics courses are for participants and researchers from any background with a basic level of numeracy. For some of the courses a knowledge of basic Mathematics to 'A' level would be an advantage.

These courses can be studied as part of a programme of Continuing Professional Development or Research Training, or as a postgraduate qualification in Quantitative Methods (PgCert, PgDip, MSc). See the postgraduate website for more details at:

Courses on specialist topics in Medical and Pharmaceutical Statistics

The 3-day courses in applied statistics provided by the Medical and Pharmaceutical Statistics Research Unit are aimed at professional medical statisticians. Familiarity with statistical methodology at postgraduate level is assumed. The 1-day courses on Systematic Reviews of Clinical Trials and Data and Safety Monitoring Boards are suitable for a wider audience with an interest in the interpretation and conduct of clinical research.

All of the professional development courses may be commissioned by a company or organisation, tailored to meet your special requirements and presented at a location of your choice both for statisticians and non-statisticians.

Applicants from outside the EU should note that these courses are not sufficient to permit a VISA application for residence in the UK.

Courses will be held in the Postgraduate Statistics Centre. These training rooms are equipped with modern Windows machines with a comfortable environment for learning.

The majority of courses will run over 2 consecutive days. A typical 2-day course timetable will be as follows.

Day 1: Thursday

• 9.30 am - Registration and coffee
• 10:00 am - Start of Course
• 17:30 pm - End of Day 1

Day 2: Friday

• 9:00 am - Start of Day 2
• 16:30 pm - End of Course

Courses held by the Medical and Pharmaceutical Statistics Research Unit

Our longer courses comprise 3 days of tuition, spread over 4 days beginning and ending just after midday, to allow participants time for travel to and from the University.

All the courses will be held at Lancaster University. The campus is compact and self-contained, with bars, dining, banking and shopping facilities all within easy, covered walking distance. It also has an excellent sports centre with a swimming pool and is surrounded by a perimeter road which is ideal for jogging.

The University is situated just south of Lancaster, close to the M6 motorway, and only half an hour's drive away from the English Lake District. Lancaster is served by fast trains from London Euston and Scotland. The nearest international airport is Manchester, which is 90 minutes away by train.

For all courses, on-campus accommodation may be available but cannot be guaranteed. Accommodation is not provided as part of the course fees and must be booked separately via the university guest rooms service.
