Researching clubbing and polydrug use

«Back

Summary: This is an ongoing research project looking at electronic dance music communities, clubbing as a leisure practice, and related polydrug use. Using a variety of methods including large scale quantitative surveys, interviews, and participant observation, Dr Fiona Measham and Dr Karenza Moore are attempting to 'build a picture' of UK club culture and UK clubbers. Currently they are focusing on recreational ketamine use, and the implications for users and dealers of the recent change to the legal status of ketamine (to a Class C substance). They are also interested in official responses to rave and club culture and related drug use, looking for example at the 'policing of pleasure' in the UK's urban night-time economy. Finally they are developing a project on polydrug users and clubbers exploring the forms, content, and participant understandings of ritualistic practices undertaken before, during, and after a night out. Their research is detailed on the Club Research website www.lancs.ac.uk/fass/projects/clubresearch. This website offers information on all these projects, and the chance to participate in this clubbing research.
