There are two main ways of getting started - search engines and gateways

 

Search Engines

Search engines are provided by a number of companies and they can search web sites or pages throughout the world according to the terms that you give them. For example, if you were interested in finding information on elder abuse, you would put these words into the search box and probably receive tens or hundreds of web addresses which have some relationship to those terms. The advantage of this is the sheer volume of links that you can get, but on the other hand many of these may not be as relevant to your studies as you might wish and many will be of dubious academic value. Gateways

Gateways are provided in order to try and direct you to sites that are considered of value in a particular area of business or study. There are several gateways for the social sciences and social work which often prove to be more useful and less time-consuming than do search engines. Some gateways that are useful are:

  • Intute: Social Sciences provides free access to high quality resources on the Internet. Each resource has been evaluated and categorised by subject specialists based at UK universities
  • Social Care Online is the UK's most complete range of information and research on all aspects of social care and social work hosted by the SCIE.

 

Key Sites

In addition to these, there are a number of key sites which give you entry to a wealth of resources. These include:
