Welcome to the Department of Applied Social Science

Department of Applied Social Science encompasses Lancaster’s teaching and research activities in criminology, social work, social policy and disability studies. We are part of the newly formed North West Doctoral Training Centre (Lancaster, Liverpool and Manchester Universities).

Research and Development

The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise found that 95% of our research is of international importance. We were also rated with 'full confidence in the quality of our teaching', the highest category in the UK Teaching Quality Assessment.

Our staff are members of the Centre for Disability Research, an inter-faculty and interdisciplinary research centre.

Mental Health in Higher Education (mhhe) aims to enhance learning and teaching about mental health through increasing networking and the sharing of approaches, across the disciplines in UK higher education.
