Email: Email Hidden PhD Supervision InterestsI would be happy to supervise doctoral students in most areas of criminology and in research on probation, youth justice, criminal justice policy and social work with offenders. ProfileCareer detailsI started working life as a probation officer, but have taught at Lancaster since 1976. I was appointed Professor of Social Work in 1993 and Professor of Criminology in 2002. The change of title reflected changes in the focus of my work as well as changes in social work itself. Research InterestsCurrent research: Programmes for targeted/hate crime offenders. With Paul Iganski. Funded by the EHRC in Scotland. Recently completed research (much of it with colleagues at Lancaster and elsewhere) includes: An evaluation of the 'Promoting Human Dignity' programme for people convicted of racially aggravated offences, funded by Merseyside Probation Trust
Other funded research on which I have published in recent years includes ESRC-funded work on racist violence, and Scottish Executive-funded work on electronic tagging and on two projects for persistent juvenile offenders. I have a good record of supervising successful PhD students, and would be glad to hear from anyone interested in doctoral research in any of my areas of interest, but particularly in probation, prisons, youth justice, racism or hate crime.
Current TeachingI am not currently involved in undergraduate teaching, apart from dissertation supervision, because I am partly 'bought out' from the department as a result of being Principal of The County College. I contribute a module to the new Master's in Criminological Research. 2011Rehabilitation of hate crime offendersIganski, P., Dixon, L., Kielinger, V., Mason, G., Jack, M., Perry, B., Stelman, A., Bargen, J., Lagou, S., Pfeffer, R. & Smith, D. 2011 Scotland: Equality and Human Rights Commission. 56 p.
