PhD in Criminology or Social work
The Department of Applied Social Science is a member of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. We have two areas of academic interest: Criminology and Social Work.
Through the most recent (2008) research assessment exercise we have official recognition that 95% of research in our Department is of an international standard.
Combined with 'excellence in teaching' confirmed by the QAA, we are one of the top university departments in the country for social work and criminology.
Our areas of research interest include:
- alcohol and drug use
- child care and protection
- criminal careers
- disability studies
- evaluation of public sector crime and welfare projects
- gender inequalities
- globalisation and crime
- hate crime
- night-time economies
- policy analysis
- prevention, punishment and criminal justice
- social exclusion
- youth leisure and youth subcultures

PG programmes are now closed to all applications. We will continue to make offers to applicants already in the system.
Any applications received after this date will be invited to reapply for autumn 2013 admissions.
Funding
There is no deadline, but if you are looking for funding, please note that you will need to have secured a place for PhD research in our Department before your application for funding can be considered, so it is important to submit your application as early as possible as our funding competitions do have deadlines.
