CWRU and the Centre for Cyber Security
Date: 12 June 2012
Interdisciplinary collaboration between CWRU and the Lancaster University Centre for Cyber Security advances the protection of children online. Pioneering research utilisesmobile phone technology to promote youth security supported by KidsCo.
Members of CWRU work closely with the Cyber Security Centre on issues related to safeguarding children and promoting well being (see http://www.security-centre.lancs.ac.uk//). Corinne May-Chahal is currently a co-investigator on iCOP (see http://scc-sentinel.lancs.ac.uk/icop//), an EU funded project which is developing image analysis techniques to identify originators of child abuse images shared in peer to peer networks. CWRU was also involved with ISIS - a research project which has developed software solutions to detecting age and gender in Computer Mediated Communication (including an app called ChildDefence see http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lancashire-12249172) and YouDesignIT - a project that is developing mobile technologies to support youth security (both funded by EPSRC). A presentation bringing this work together and considering the implications for social work was given at New Horizons in Safeguarding Conference on May 24th. An article reporting on this work is forthcoming in the British Journal of Social Work.
