First International Workshop on Albinism in Sub-Saharan Africa to take place in Cameroon

Date: 24 July 2015

On 24th and 25th July 2015, experts on albinism from across Africa and Europe will be meeting at the Sawa Hotel in Douala, Cameroon, for the First International Workshop on Oculocutaneous Albinism in sub-Saharan Africa. This two-day event will include presentations and discussion on albinism as a condition, and the social inclusion and well-being of people with albinism in sub-Saharan Africa.

The event is funded by a Wellcome Trust Medical Humanities Small Grant and Lancaster University FASS Knowledge Exchange Fellowship awarded to Dr Charlotte Baker, and by the University of Douala, the Ministry of Health in Cameroon, and the European Society for Pigment Cell Research.

The workshop will be an opportunity to share research into the realities of living with albinism in Sub-Saharan Africa. The event will include presentations from experts in genetics, biology, oncology, ophthalmology, dermatology, the social sciences and humanities.

During the second day of the workshop African associations and advocates working with people with albinism will share their experiences and activities, both as people living with the condition, and as individuals and organisations working to promote the social inclusion of this group in Sub Saharan Africa.

This workshop aims to add value to African advocates’ work through the sharing of evidence-based research findings on topics associated with the condition, and to provide avenues for academic research to maximize its impact through informing the work of advocates and other members of civil society.

This is an event jointly organized and facilitated by:

Dr Charlotte Baker, Lancaster University, UK

Dr Patricia Lund, Coventry University, UK

Jon Beale, Standing Voice, London, UK

Professor Robert Aquaron, Aix-Marseille University, France

Professor Albert Mouelle Sone, University of Douala, Cameroon
