Mac Pro and cinema display

The Mac Pro system is a fully equipped video and audio editing suite. The suite is available to use in the Mobilities.Lab room in B19, Bowland North. Please see the Room Booking page for how to obtain access.

The suite is equipped with dual display: 30″ HD Apple Cinema display, and a 20″ Apple Cinema display.

In addition to the standard audio-visual Mac software (such as iMovie, iWeb, and iWorks) the suite includes the following software:

• Final Cut Express 4.0
• Adobe Creative Suite 4 (Web Premium) – Dreamweaver, Flash, Photoshop Extended, Illustrator, Fireworks, Acrobat Pro, Soundbooth, Contribute, Adobe Bridge, Adobe Device Central, Version Cue.
• Aperture 2.0
• Roxio Toast Titanium

The Mac Pro features include Quad-core Intel Xeon 3500 series processor. Four FireWire 800 ports (two on front panel, two on back panel). Five USB 2.0 ports (two on front panel, three on back panel). Two USB 2.0 ports on included keyboard. Front-panel headphone minijack and internal speaker. Optical digital audio input and output TOSLINK ports. Analog stereo line-level input and output minijacks. 18x SuperDrive with double-layer support (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW).

Transana Software

Transana is software for professional researchers who want to analyze digital video or audio data. Transana lets you analyze and manage your data in very sophisticated ways. Transcribe it, identify analytically interesting clips, assign keywords to clips, arrange and rearrange clips, create complex collections of interrelated clips, explore relationships between applied keywords, and share your analysis with colleagues. The result is a new way to focus on your data, and a new way to manage large collections of video and audio files and clips.

Transana is open-source and available for both PC and Mac. There is a small charge for use.

Express Scribe

Express Scribe is free professional audio player software for PC, Mac or Linux designed to assist the transcription of audio recordings. A typist can install it on their computer and control audio playback using a transcription foot pedal or keyboard (with ‘hot’ keys). This computer transcriber application also offers valuable features for typists including variable speed playback, multi-channel control, playing video, file management, and more.

It is free to install, and is designed for use with a foot pedal. Features include:

Variable speed playback (constant pitch). Supports Video. Supports professional foot pedals which connect to the USB port to control playback. More info… Uses ‘hot’ keys to control playback when using other software (eg. Word). Ability to dock both analog and digital portable recorders to load recordings. Works with Microsoft Word and all major word-processor applications. Integrates directly with Express Delegate Dictation Workflow. Audacity software

Audacity is an open-source audio editing software package, available for both PC and Mac. It allows wave form editing and input/export functions, as well as some filters.

Panasonic NV-GS500

The Panasonic NV-GS500 Mini DV camcorder is a 3CCD handheld unit suitable for everyday video recording (it does not support HD). Mini DV tapes must be purchased separately. It features:

3CCD MiniDV camcorder with 12 x optical zoom with a 30 x digital zoom.  This camera uses a Leica Dicomar Lens to record high quality movies and 4 megapixel still shots.  The Panasonic NV-GS500 allows you to take 1.2 megapixel still shots whilst recording movies and will function as a webcam using the optional Firewire cable.  This camera features an Anti Ground Shooting mode (AGS) which switches the camera off rather than letting you waste battery and memory by recording the ground.

The Sony Vaio PCG-Z1RMP, manufactured in 2006, is a desktop-replacement PC laptop. It is available in the Mobilities.Lab in Bowland North to borrow and use. It features:

HQR-C2 Bullet Camera

Sennheiser Wireless Receiver (Mic separate)

The Sennheiser Wireless Mic is a camera-mountable UHF wireless microphone and receiver system. It is part of the Sennheiser G2 Evolution system. Its features include:

Nokia N96 Smartphone

Nokia N96 smartphone has built-in GPS and video and audio recording capability. It is suitable for location-based research and documentation (e.g. using www.locoblog.com). Note that phones do not come with a SIM card or contract, this must be supplied by the researcher. Its features include:
