A mobile sociology of interactive travel?
Researching social relations and leisure travel in the information age.

I am in the initial stages of designing a research project that examines the intersection between technology, mobility and sociality. My project is to trace the emerging genre of interactive travel and to investigate the implications of the convergence between corporeal and virtual mobilities for the way people stay in touch while on the move.

The project aims to explore various spaces and forms of cultural and technological production - including the Internet, mobile phones, wireless hotspots, websites, travel bldgs, moblogs and the media, advertising and promotional campaigns surrounding mobile networking services and devices - within the context of leisure travel and sociality. Among the theoretical issues at stake in this investigation are notions of cosmopolitanism, citizenship, belonging, hospitality, escape, surveillance, and questions of connection and disconnection, public and private, home and away.

In this seminar, I would like to present the questions - both theoretical and methodological - that I am grappling with in designing this project and to invite comments, suggestions and feedback for developing a coherent research agenda.
