Cycling and the Social SciencesA symposium hosted by the Centre for Mobilities Research, Lancaster University Tuesday 29th June 2004 Bowland Senior Common Room, Lancaster University The practice of cycling is relevant to many contemporary debates; about climate change and sustainability, obesity and healthy lifestyles, and urban quality-of-life. Cycling is also a key everyday mode of mobility across the globe, and one which is increasingly actively promoted by governments across car-dominated societies such as the UK. Cycling is also a complex and hugely varied practice, yet one which remains remarkably unexplored by the social sciences. This event aims to bring together academics, activists and transport professionals who are interested in social scientific approaches to the practice of cycling and the object of the bicycle. Abstracts, Papers and Presentations Whether you wish to attend only one or all of these sessions, you will be very welcome. The event is free, but please let Pennie Drinkall at the Centre for Mobilities Research know if you are planning to attend. If you intend to cycle to the university or would like to hire a cycle at the rail station please see Cycle Point which is based at Lancaster rail station. The cycle route from the rail station to the university is signposted from the city centre. There are numerous cycle racks around the campus - those nearest to Bowland Senior Common Room are situated off the spine near Lonsdale porters lodge and in Bowland College quad. - Local Maps and info
This symposium will be followed by a Cycling and the Social Sciences workshop on Wednesday 30th June. The aim of the workshop is to bring together social scientists actively researching cycling and/or the bicycle. If you would like to contribute to this workshop, and form part of a developing network of cycling researchers, please contact Dave Horton.
