About the Centre
The Centre for Gender and Women's Studies is an internationally renowned research and teaching centre with a long and important history.
The centre is distinctly interdisciplinary in its focus and also aims to foster links between academic research, and political movements for gender equality and social justice.
We welcome anybody with an interest in gender, sexuality and feminist research to participate in the informal and formal events organised through and affiliated with the centre.
The centre is currently Directed by Dr Imogen Tyler and Dr Celia Roberts.
The centre has glittering staff and student alumni which includes some of the most famous feminist academics in the UK and beyond. Former directors of the Centre include Jackie Stacey, Sara Ahmed, Celia Lury, Bev Skeggs, Gail Lewis, Lynne Pearce, Anne-Marie Fortier, Vicky Singleton and Maureen McNeil. |

Gender and Women's Studies Degrees
Undergraduate Study
The pathway for Sociology and Media and Cultural Studies Majors
First year: Gender and Women's Studies (101).
Second year: Gender, Sexuality and Society (208).
Third Year: Feminism and Social Change (314) and Gender and Women's Studies Dissertation course (360).
Postgraduate Study
GWS offers a taught Master's Degree in Women's Studies and combined Masters in:
• MA in Gender and Women's Studies
• MA in Gender and Women's Studies and Education
• MA in Gender and Women's Studies and English
• MA in Gender and Women's Studies and Sociology
Current MA core and option courses taught in the centre include:
- Feminist Technoscience Studies
- Debates in Gender Research
- Gender, Sex and Bodies
- Feminist Cultural Theory
- Gender and Violence
Any MA students from across the university can take these courses and PhD students from any department can audit them.
We also offer a PhD programme with MA and PhD funding opportunities through the ESRC North West Doctoral Training School and (from 2014) through a new AHRC doctoral training school. |
