Hannah is interesting in supervising projects in the inter-disciplinary field of disability studies.

Research Interests

I came to Lancaster in December 2003 after working on disability-related research projects at the Social Policy Research Unit (SPRU), University of York and the Centre for Disability Studies at the University of Leeds.

My research interests lie predominantly in the field of disability studies and include the self-organisation and citizenship of disabled people; independent living; welfare and service provision for adult service users; the self-organisation of disabled people and their organisations; disability policy at a UK and European level; and mobility and social capital.

I am also interested in inclusive education and with Ann-Marie Houghton have produced a guide for the Higher Education Academy on Inclusive Curriculum Design in Higher Education: Considerations for effective practice across and within subject areas.

In 2012 I guest edited with Alan Roulstone a special edition of Social Work Education: the international journal.  Disability Studies and Social Work Education included articles from England, Wales, Australia, Canada and Israel. My article in the issue The social model of disability as a threshold concept: Troublesome knowledge and liminal spaces in social work education has been given the Award for the 2012 Best Conceptual Article in the journal and has been made free to access. The article will be discussed at the JSWEC Journal Club in July 2013 which can be followed on twitter https://twitter.com/jswecjour13.

I am co-investigator with Sarah Galvani of University of Bedford of a Thomas Pocklington Trust/Alcohol Research UK funded scoping study exploring substance use and visual impairment.

I am a member of management committee of the Centre for Disability Reserach (CeDR) an interdisciplinary centre that draws together colleagues interested in disability from across the University and beyond.

I organise the Lancaster Disability Studies Conference which attracts over 240 international delegates (2003; 2004; 2006;2008;2010;2012). The conference now takes place on a biennial basis alternating with the Nordic Network on Disability Research's conferences. The next Lancaster conference will take place 7-9 September 2014. I am the book reviews editor and a member of the editorial board of the international journal Disability and Society and have reviewed articles for Disability Studies Quarterly and Progress in Palliative Care. I have contributed book reviews to Disability and Society, the British Journal of Social Work and Qualitative Research in Psychology.

Current Teaching

I contribute to teaching on the BA (Hons) and MA/PGDip Social Work programmes, convening modules in relation to disability and adult social care, supervising dissertations and acting as social work tutor to students on placement. I am the departmental disability representative.

I convene the following modules

ASSC 439 Disability and the Life Course (MA/PgD Social Work)

I also co-supervise three post-graduate research students including:

• Disability and Leadership: A Qualitative Study of the 'Work Experiences' of Disabled Business Leaders (PhD)
• Cochlear Implants and the Deaf Community. (Phd)

I am interested in supervising projects in the inter-disciplinary field of disability studies.
