PhD Supervision Interests

I am interested in working with students in any area of gender studies, media studies, cultural studies or visual culture, but have particular research interests in:

Embodiment and performance
Femininities, including queer and trans femininities
Gender and popular culture
Digital media and online cultures
Celebrity, fashion and dress

Current Teaching

Since 2010 I have been MA Convenor for Media and Cultural Studies, including teaching on the following courses:

SOCL 921: Critical Debates in Media and Cultural Studies (convenor)

SOCL 923: Critical Methods in Media and Cultural Studies (convenor and lecturer/tutor)

GWS 403: Feminist Cultural Theory

At undergraduate level, I convene and teach the core course for the BA programme in Media and Cultural Studies, MCS.200: Critical Cultural Theory.I also contribute teaching to GWS.101: Introduction to Gender and Women's Studies.

My research and teaching are closely interconnected: until 2012 I convened a module on Gender Performativity. My conversations with students on this course directly informed the themes and ideas included in my forthcoming monograph on fashion, femininity and feminism. My teaching practice is informed by my strong research interest in innovative approaches to pedagogy drawn from Networked Learning.

Research Interests

I am a feminist cultural theorist with strong research interests in gender, feminist theory, sexuality, critical race theory, queer theory and embodiment. My research engages with embodied and social aspects of new media and digital cultures, celebrity culture, fashion, and consumption.

My current research falls into the following project areas:

• Fashioning Femininity: Dress, Embodiment, Gender, Performance. I am currently working on a monograph of the same name (under contract with Berg).
• Visual Cultures of Thinness, Anorexia and Size Zero
• Vintage fashion and subculture
• Online Belongings: researching social aspects of digital cultures.
• Fantasy, Affect and the Digital
• Networked Learning: pedagogical practice and digital technology (with Vivien Hodgson)
