here@lancaster is the Higher Education Research and Evaluation Centre in the Department of Educational Research. The Centre supports a wide range of research and evaluation work that is concerned with higher education in all its manifestations: teaching; research; administration; income generation. Members of the Centre are core providers of the Department's taught doctoral programmes.

The work of the Centre builds on research and evaluative work conducted by its predecessor, CSET. The Centre brings together many areas of expertise of current staff and research students in the Department, drawing on the experience of research into and evaluation of higher education institutions, systems and innovations that we have carried out over many years in the UK and abroad.

For example, in recent years current staff have been involved in research and evaluative studies in the following areas:

• the Scottish university system’s Quality Enhancement Framework
• the evaluation of the Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETLs)
• the evaluation of the Learning and Teaching Support Network
• the evaluation of the FDTL programme
• the evaluation of widening participation programmes
• the evaluation of a number of individual CETLs
• the evaluation of a multi-million pound strategic development project in an English university
• research into disciplinary differences in higher education
• research into student engagement in higher education
• research into academic cultures and disciplinary differences in higher education
• research into learning and teaching enhancement processes in higher education
• research into the discipline of sociology and issues of quality and inequality therein
• policy analysis, for example,UK higher education partnership programmes

Staff and students regularly present at conferences and are involves actively in the biennial Higher Education Close Up conference, devoted to improving fine-grained research into higher education. This is a network of the Society for Research into Higher Education. Members of here@lancaster are closely involved with the work of that society, and two of them are SRHE elected Fellows.
