15th May 2009. Colloquium - "Memory and Justice" at Lancaster University.
Speakers included Alan J. Rice (UCLan), Nayanika Mookherjee (Sociology) and Agata Fijalkowski (Law). Co-organised by Mercedes Camino (DELC) and David Sugarman (Law).

23rd February 2009. Sir Geoffrey Bindman (Founder, Bindman LLP) - “Reflections on My Life as a Civil Liberties Lawyer” at Lancaster University.
Co-sponsored with the Human Rights Forum.

 

2008

2008-2009. Seminar Series - "Conceptualising the Contemporary 'Professions': Interdisciplinary Debates"
This was a series of seminars funded, following competitive tender, by the ESRC Annual Seminar Series Award (£13,861.58). It was organised in collaboration with colleagues in the Geography Departments of the Universities of Lancaster and Nottingham, Leeds University Business School and the Cass Business School, London.

11th November 2008. International Conference – “The Pinochet Case and its Consequences Ten Years On” at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of London.
Organised in association with: The British Institute of International and Comparative Law; the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, London University; the Institute for the Study of the Americas, London University; and JUSTICE (the British section of the International Commission of Jurists).

Contributors included: Lord Hope of Craighead; Geoffrey Robertson QC; Dr Juan Garcés; Prof. Maxine Molyneux; Reed Brody; Roger Smith OBE; Christopher Hall; Elizabeth Wilmshurst; Wolfgang Kaleck; Hugh O’Shaughnessy; and Prof. David Sugarman.

Brought together over 100 representatives from Britain, the USA, Spain, Germany, Pakistan, the Netherlands, Chile, Boliva - including judges, NGO's, victims, lawyers, journalists and government representatives.

7th - 8th November 2008. Conference – “From Human Rights to the Primacy of the Political” at Lancaster House Hotel.
Speakers included Louise Selisny (Amnesty International); Carmela Baranowska (University of Melbourne); Ralph Wilde (UCL); Eilionoir Flynn (Cork); Kasey Lowe (Edinburgh); Bill Bowring (Birkbeck); James Summers, David Seymour and Emilie Secker (Lancaster Law School).
Organised by Dr David Seymour.

13th March 2008. Professor José Zalaquett (University of Chile) - “Truth and Justice in the Wake of Dictatorship and Armed Conflict” at Lancaster University.

11th March 2008. Colloquium - “Victorian and Post-Victorian Legal Systems in Britain and Continental Europe: Legal Buildings and ‘Englishness’ at The Civil Justice Centre, Manchester.
This was the first academic colloquium held at the new Civil Justice Centre. It was chaired by Mr Justice Ryder, the senior Family judge of the Northern Circuit. The event was attended by members of the faculty, students and members of the local legal community. The speakers were Professors Reiner Schulze and David Sugarman.

25th February 2008. Colin Ettinger (Partner, Irwin Mitchell LLP, former President, Association of Personal Injury Lawyers and Hon. Research Fellow, CLS) -“Personal Injury Law and Doing Justice” at Lancaster University.
In association with the Lancaster Law Students Society.

18th February 2008. Roger Smith OBE (Director, JUSTICE) - “Access to Justice and Human Rights” at Lancaster University.
Co-sponsored with the Human Rights Forum.

 

2007

22nd December 2007. Conference – “The Role of NGO’s in Governance” at Lancaster University.
Speakers included: Prof. Sir Nigel Rodley; civil servants from the UK government (DTI and FCO); representatives of the EU Commission, the Asian Development Bank, NGOs (Citizen’s Advice Bureau, the EU-based AGE Platform, the Geneva-based International Service for Human Rights); and academics. The event was funded jointly by the Institute of Advanced Studies, the Department of Politics and International Relations and the Centre for Law and Society, and was organised by Dr Israel Butler.

28th November 2007. Captain James Yee (US Army Muslim Chaplain who served at Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility) - “The Guantanamo Detention Centre and My Wrongful Arrest on Charges of Spying and Aiding the Taliban and Al-Qaeda” at Lancaster University.

Captain James 'Yusuf' Yee reflected on his service as a US Army Muslim Chaplain serving at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and his subsequent wrongful arrest on charges of spying and aiding the Taliban and Al-Qaeda. Chaplain Yee's experience raises troubling questions about patriotism, citizenship, and safe living in the post-9/11 US.
In association with the Departments of History; Sociology; Politics; Religious Studies; Organisation, Work and Technology, and Lancaster University Islamic Society.

27th September 2007. Conference – “Legal Services in North-West England: the Changing Landscape” at Lancaster University.
The conference was organised in association with Institute of Advanced Studies (who provided £500 under its Annual Research Programme 2006-7 “Regions and Regionalism in and beyond Europe” programme) and the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of London (who contributed £100 funding the conference).

Over 80 delegates attended, representing: The Office of the Legal Services Complaints Commissioner and Legal Services Ombudsman for England and Wales; The Ministry of Justice; The North West Development Agency; LawWorks North West (formerly, the Solicitors Pro Bono Group); The Citizens Advice Service; The Legal Action Group; The Law Society of England and Wales; The Association of Women Solicitors; The Association of Black Solicitors; The Association of Personal Injury Lawyers; The Institute of Legal Executives; Cumbria Community Legal Services; Shelter Cumbria; The Law Centres Federation; Local/regional legal practitioners; The College of Law, Pro Bono Legal Assistance Unit; Academics; Local Judges; and Lancaster law students. Those present included the senior partners of two of the ten largest law firms in the UK, one of whom is a Lancaster law graduate.

The proceedings were published as: Legal Services in North West England: the Changing Landscape. (Special Issue of Amicus Curiae – the Journal of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, London, issue 76). David Sugarman (Editor). London: Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, 2008 pp. 68.

 

14th September 2007. Conference – “Law, Religion, Culture: An Interdisciplinary Symposium” at Lancaster University.
Twelve papers were presented at this symposium that brought together national experts in the field. Co-organised by Drs Sarah Beresford and Ian Bryan.

21st March 2007. Prof. Raphael Cohen-Almagor (Politics, Hull University) - “In Internet's Way: Freedom of expression and the scope of tolerance when the Internet is used to sustain terrorism, racism, hate speech and child pornography” at Lancaster University.
In association with the Linguistics Department.

 

2006

27th November 2006. Workshop – “Personal Insolvency Law: International Perspectives” at Lancaster University.
Speakers: Prof. Karen Gross, President Southern Vermont College & Professor, New York Law School; Prof. Udo Reifner, Institut fur Finanzdienstleistungen, Hamburg; Takeshi Muramoto, Himeji Dokkyo, Law School, Japan; Prof. David Milman, Law, Lancaster.
Over 50 delegates attended, including lawyers, accountants, insolvency practitioners and NGO’s.
In association with the Consumer Law Academic Network; the Northern Commercial Lawyers Group; and the European Coalition for Responsible Credit.
Organised by Profs. David Milman and Geraint Howells (Lancaster, Law).

15th November 2006. Craig Murray (former UK Ambassador to Uzbekistan) – “The War on Terrorism and Human Rights” at Lancaster University.
In association with the Richardson Centre for Peace Studies, Politics and International Relations Dept., and Lancaster Law Students Society.

 

7-9th July 2006. International Conference - “'Without Let or Hindrance'. Inclusion and its Subversion from the Medieval to the Modern” at Lancaster University.
Plenary speakers: Profs. Radhika Mongia, Feminist Studies, University of California Santa Cruz; David Ditchburn, Department of History, University of Aberdeen; S. N. Balagangadhara, Comparative Science of Cultures, Ghent University, Belgium.
Co-sponsored with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Department of History.

12th May 2006. Workshop – “Class Actions – the US Experience” at Lancaster University.
Speakers: Profs. Deborah Hensler (Stanford), Mark Mildred (Nottingham Trent), Geraint Howells (Lancaster) and Dr Christopher Hodges (Oxford).
