ResearchThe Institute offers opportunities for postgraduates to take Ph.D. degrees by research. The Institute offers supervision and support and extensive research contacts. In special cases it is possible to take these degrees on a part-time basis or in combination with relevant work carried out elsewhere. Research training is available in the first year. The current research interests of the Institute includes work in the following fields: Peace processes. Based on a programme of work in mediation and peaceful settlement of disputes, research is underway into the factors which contribute to and block successful outcomes in peace processes, with an empirical focus on the conflicts in Northern Ireland, Israel-Palestine and South Africa. Conflict prevention. We have a special interest in international and non-governmental efforts to prevent intra-national and inter-ethnic conflicts from reaching a stage of armed violence. Studies are in progress on conflict prevention in the Balkans and the Baltic States. Problem-solving workshops. We undertook a workshop on Kosovo for young Serbs and Albanians in June 1998, and will follow this up in 1999 with further workshops aimed at sustaining and empowering a constituency for dialogue. The Southern Balkans. There is a programme on current conflicts and conflict resolution in Albania, Macedonia and Kosovo. Northern Ireland. We have a strong research record on contemporary political developments, Unionist politics, the role of NGOs in the peace process and the role of the churches in Northern Ireland. The Former Soviet Union. Research is underway on ethnic conflict and > conflict prevention in the Baltic States and Ukraine. Israel-Palestine. Intra-party conflict management. |
