Welcome to the Department of Educational Research

The Department of Educational Research is a leading international centre of postgraduate research training in education. We offer world leading PhD programmes in Education and Social Justice, Higher Education and Technology-Enhanced Learning. Our three research centres in these areas are internationally recognised for the excellence and originality of their research.

Research Excellence

The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2008 confirmed our status as one of the leading Education Departments in the country, with 80% of our research activity judged to be of international standing, and 45% graded as internationally excellent and world leading.

Postgraduate Degrees

The Educational Research Department offers a portfolio of research led continuing professional development at doctoral level.

Students can choose to study:

  • (by thesis and coursework) part-time, distance learning
  • (by research only) full time or part-time at Lancaster University

and be part of a thriving and exciting research culture.

PhD/MPhil - (by thesis and coursework)

group of students thesis and coursework (part-time, distance learning).

A PhD designed to be studied at a distance for graduates who want to study part-time whilst continuing to work with programmes focused on, Education and Social Justice, Higher Education, Technology Enhanced Learning and Teacher Education.

We hold frequent Department seminars involving external speakers, Department staff and research students. Many of these are available to view or listen to online. View online seminars »

PhD/Mstudents chatting to advisorPhil - (by research only)

independent study (full-time or part-time).

We welcome proposals from doctoral research in any of the Department's many areas of teaching or research, from students who are able to attend regular supervisions at Lancaster University.
