Designing an Inclusive Curriculum in Higher Education (DICHE)

«Back

Summary: The project, commissioned by the Higher Education Academy, aims to develop guidance that offers a range of practical ways to embed the requirements of the equality legislation within the design of the curriculum within different subject disciplines.

Project Description

The background to this study is based on changes in legislation relating to the six equality groups (gender, race, disability, age, sexuality and religion and faith). There is a plethora of materials available to support the delivery of the curriculum in HE to promote success for all students. In contrast there is very little advice available in the HE sector about how to embed the requirements of equality legislation into the content of the curriculum to ensure the entitlements of all students are met. The curriculum design process is a core mechanism of achieving the legislation requirements by raising awareness of those unfamiliar with the importance of an inclusive curriculum; engaging those already committed but seeking to develop and enhance their curriculum for all students; and disseminating the examples of effective practice already in existence. The project provides a further opportunity to recognise the challenges and exchange the successful approaches associated with specific disciplines. The project will engender discussion as well as generate a practical guide that places examples of effective practice within the context of policy and underpinning principles of equity, inclusion and diversity.
