The Department has a world class reputation for excellence in both teaching and research.
Teaching
We offer innovative, specialist undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that are consistently rated as excellent by students, external examiners and internal and external reviewers. The Department was recently ranked 10th in the UK and top in the North West of England by the Guardian University Guide 2012. Our graduate employment rates are outstanding; the University has just been ranked in the top 5 in the UK for graduate employability.

Undergraduate Programme
Research
Since the first Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 1992 the Department has consistently been judged to be one of the best in the Country. RAE 2008 put us in the top 20 departments nationally, with 80% of our research activity judged to be of international standing, and 45% graded as internationally excellent and world leading.
