Evaluative research knowledge: use, usability, effects and impact

This seminar will outline some of the contemporary problems associated with evaluative research within national and international contexts. Because evaluative research has an embedded rationale which foregrounds its social and policy 'use' (in a way conventional research does not), the extent to which evaluative research outputs may or may not be used is becoming increasingly pertinent. As a contribution to this debate, the seminar will make distinctions between 'use' and 'usability' of evaluative research outputs and connect it to the debate on how there is increasing pressure on evaluative research to identify the 'effects' of social funding in the European context. This imperative is presented as a specific kind of evaluative research 'use'.
