Seminar Series - Stories of Self: Tracking children's identity and wellbeing through the school years

Date: 17 November 2010 Time: 12.30 - 2.00 p.m.

Venue: IAS MR1

Dr Jo Warin

Educational Research, Lancaster University

I will describe and discuss this rather unusual study in which I worked with a small group of young people from their pre-school days until their point of departure from compulsory schooling. I will present the study's purposes, methods and findings, focusing particularly on the emerging concept of 'identity capital'. I will illustrate this through the data I collected with two of the children comparing the resources that each brings to bear on their making and remaking of selves. I will draw conclusions about the need for social and emotional goals to be given higher status within policy areas concerning the lives of children and young people.
