Seminar Series - 'Negotiating the technology minefield - families negotiating the discourses of ICT and the Internet at home'Date: 11 May 2011 Time: 12.30 - 2.00 p.m. Venue: IAS MR2 Claire Coulton Department of Educational Research, Lancaster University 'Negotiating the technology minefield - families negotiating the discourses of ICT and the Internet at home' Parents and families are subject to a number of both competing and conflicting discourses related to children and young people's technology use. On the one hand, ICTs are promoted by Government as an essential educational tool for today's Knowledge Economy while on the other, access to ICTs and the internet is presented in popular discourse as risky and dangerous in terms of children's mental, emotional and physical health. In this seminar, I will present findings which show how four local families use ICT and the internet at home for learning, both formally and informally and how parents and children have learned how to use ICT. Alongside these findings, I will discuss how parents negotiate or reject official and public discourses relating to ICT and the internet and what concerns parents have about the effects of ICT and the internet on their children's education and learning.
