Jonathan Tummons
Thesis Working TitleAssessment as textually mediated activity within a community of practice Research InterestsI have several research interests that inform my PhD research:
I am interested in the different ways in which the communities of practice framework has been used, and more specifically, how it has been added to by different authors using different theoretical frameworks. In my research, I am looking at ways by which assessment can be conceptualised as being part of the repertoire of an educational community of practice.
I am using actor network theory in my research as a framework for investigating how the course that I teach on is ordered across geographical and institutional boundaries. Specifically, I am interested in the technologies (predominantly text based) that are employed by the university which franchises the course.
A new literacy studies perspective offers me a way of thinking about text based artefacts in terms of their creation, and the ways in which they are read and responded to. This perspective also provides me with theoretical tools for exploring the textual practices of assessment, as experienced by PGCE/CertEd students. Journal publications: Tummons J (2008, in press) Assessment, and the literacy practices of trainee PCET teachers. International Journal of Educational Research. Conference papers: Tummons J "Audit cultures in UK higher education: keep things simple, keep things safe?" Paper delivered at Discourse, Power, Resistance, Manchester Metropolitan University, March 2008. Tummons J " 'There's so many bits of paper!' Higher education in further education, and an actor-network perspective on the assessment of trainee PCET teachers". Paper delivered at the British Educational Research Association Conference, Institute of Education, September 2007. Tummons J "Higher education in further education, and an actor-network perspective on the assessment of trainee PCET teachers". Paper delivered at the 7th International JVET Conference, Oxford, July 2007. Dixon L, Jennings A, Orr K and Tummons J "Contingency and diversity: what do trainee Further Education teachers learn on placement?". Paper delivered at the 7th International JVET Conference, Oxford, July 2007. Tummons J " 'I seem to remember going with quite a thick pile of paper home, and I had no idea what I was doing': assessment, and the literacy practices of trainee PCET teachers". Paper delivered at Higher Education Close Up 3, Lancaster University, July 2006. The conference website can be found here. Tummons J "'I think I would work better if the out line of the assignment was wrote in a way that was easier for everyone to understand': the acquisition of academic literacies amongst trainee further education lecturers". Paper delivered at the 6th International JVET Conference, Oxford, July 2005. Current TeachingI am a lecturer in teacher education in a further education college, working on a PGCE/CertEd programme franchised from a nearby university which leads to QTLS status for student teachers. I have also taught research methods to part-time undergraduates on a BA Education and Training course for the same university. I have written two textbooks relating to this course, both published by Learning Matters. I am just starting to write a third. Details about my books can be found here.
